Building Your Self Esteem Will Lead to Self Improvement
All around you may, at one point or another, try to destroy your self esteem pulling you down in many ways - some memorable, others not. You must not let them destroy you, damage your self esteem or even get the better of you.
Here are some suggestions that can be used to safeguard for your self esteem and provide the basis for self improvement.
Change = Evolution
There is nothing more certain in life than death, taxes and CHANGE. Most people grudgingly accept death and taxes but fight against change. However, you must not be a stick in the mud fighting change. Change may challenge your beliefs, test your flexibility, adaptability and alter the way you think. But, you can take solace from the fact that the bad and uncomfortable will also change. Change can make life difficult in the short term, it may even cause stress, but it will eventually help you find ways to improve yourself. Change is always with you and must be accepted. You must bend and compromise and use change to help you to continually improve.
Employment
Always be careful of the rat race where the "dog eat dog" attitude is rife. Others will be fighting just to get ahead. Non-appreciative people will thrive in this type of environment. No one will appreciate (let alone express that appreciation) your contributions even if you miss meals and breaks, and stay up late to complete tasks on time. You will have to work without the help or support of the people concerned. Stay out of that race; it can only ruin your self esteem. However, competition is always with you and you must be strong enough to compete, but only where that competition is healthy.
People
Many people will put pressure on your self esteem and seek to lower your opinion of yourself. This is an attempt to improve their own perceived standing. In the early days of building your self esteem they will pose difficulties, but as you develop your self esteem this problem will subside. Therefore it is most important that when you start you are on your guard. These people will consist mainly of those who have had their own self esteem damaged and downgraded.
Experience and Knowledge
It is okay to cry and shout out when we experience pain or suffer disappointment. But don't let the pain transform itself into fear which then grows into paranoia. Treat each failure, mistake and disappointment as a lesson and learn to better yourself from the experience. Also analyze other people's successes and failures and learn from them.
Positivity versus Negativity
Look for the best in whatever you're observing. Be a "half full" kind of a guy. Don't wrap yourself up with all the negativities of the world. Being positive will build your self esteem, learn how to make the best out of the poor situations. Always be positive and do not allow negative thinking influence your progress towards your goals
Determination and Persistence
The way you are and your instinctive behaviour is created by a mixture of inherited traits, upbringing, and environmental surroundings. This will include your spouse, family, employer, the company you keep and your circle of friends. You have your own identity and developing this in your own way is very important. If your father is a failure, it doesn't mean you have to be a failure too.
It is hard to stay focused when things and people around you are trying to pull you down and belittle your efforts.
You must accept that in life you will get hit and bruised and suffer disappointments. Proper protection is provided by your ability to change. Your willingness to change: your attitude, behaviour and way of thinking. Never lose sight of your ultimate goals and persist in your efforts to achieve them.
You have, no doubt, wondered why some people appear to have been born leaders and positive thinkers. THEY ARE NOT! Being positive, and staying positive is your choice. Building self esteem and always aiming for self improvement is a choice, not a rule or a talent.
To summarize: Be positive. Be contented. Be happy. Be appreciative. Never miss an opportunity to compliment. As you develop your self esteem, take control of your mission, your values and your discipline. Self esteem with determination and persistence will bring about self improvement, true assessment, and determination.
